Workshops

Söndag

*Gambeson workshop
During the 14th century, the gambeson was worn either as a standalone textile piece of armor, or as a shock-absorbing layer under metal armour. As such, it was an important piece of equipment, and constructed in different ways. One of the most intriguing options has been uncovered in Russia, during excavations on the site of a military camp outside Pskov – it is a fragment of a garment with remains of mail links rusted to it. During this workshop, we will present an attempt to recreate it. The workshop opens with a presentation of 14th century gambesons. Next, a demonstration of various types of gambeson construction will take place, followed by a workshop explaining necessary measurement taking for individually fitted gambesons, as well as demonstration of a possible, experimental way of recreating the Pskov under-armor garment (more information about which will be included in the lecture). Participants will have the opportunity to recreate a small part of the Pskov gambeson and examine the pros and cons of different types of under-armor garments.

Craft of the sword cutler: hilting a 14th century arming sword /Svärdsfejarens hantverk: hur ett 1300-tals svärd förses med fäste
Swordmaker Peter Johnsson demonstrates how to hilt a sword with a leather-over-cord grip, starting with an unmounted blade and a pre-fabricated guard and pommel. The hilt construction is based on studies of 14th century sword finds.
The sword completed during the demonstration is similar to a type that was used around the time of the Battle of Wisby in 1361. The display includes a discussion on how various hilt elements affect the functional properties of the sword as well as alternative types of hilt mounting and materials used.
Peter Johnsson has been making swords on a professional basis since 1999. His work is displayed in museums both in Sweden and abroad. In addition to his hand crafted custom work, he designs swords for Albion Armorers.
